If your home is in an area where snake sightings are common, you have likely at some point walked outside to find an unwanted guest. Many people are afraid of snakes, whether they be harmless or poisonous, and it can be difficult to remain calm when you spot these pests slithering close to your home. Here are two basic ways to keep snakes away, the latter featuring three specific methods:

  1. Chase: If you spot a snake near your home, grab the garden hose, chase the snake and spray it. This should cause the snake to slither away rather quickly.
  2. Repel:
  • Ammonia – Snakes dislike the smell of ammonia. Soak rags in ammonia and place them in plastic, unsealed bags, leaving them around the areas where you usually find snakes. If using this method, it is best to keep pets away from the ammonia.
  • Hair – Another simple way to repel snakes is with human hair. Snakes dislike humans as much as some humans dislike them, so, taking hair from your hairbrush and sprinkling it around the perimeter of your home or yard could be enough to keep snakes away.
  • Vinegar – Snakes have the ability to absorb liquids through their skin. To keep snakes away, pour white vinegar around any non-porous surface, such as a sealed deck or pool edge.

If you see a snake, remember to try to take a good look at it and determine if it is poisonous, before chasing it away from your property. If you believe a snake is poisonous, it’s best to call animal control to have it removed. Here is a resource that will help you determine whether a snake is poisonous or non-poisonous.
